Ira Summers

Hello,

My name is Ira Summers, and I am a fine art photographer based in West Jefferson, North Carolina, USA. My primary focus is on landscape photography, particularly the skies as well as a strong interest in photographing the night skies and celestial phenomena.

My artwork is typically produced in 4x5 (8x10, etc.), panoramic (6x12 or 6x17), or square (1:1) formats. I am continually expanding my artistic horizons, so please visit my website regularly to view my latest works.

History

I grew up in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, a charming small town nestled off the Blue Ridge Parkway, surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. During my summers, I spent a significant amount of time at my grandparents’ farm in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, nestled in the Smoky Mountains. From a young age, my father instilled in me a sense of travel and adventure. At the age of 10, after saving up and purchasing various point-and-shoot cameras, I finally got my first SLR camera—a film Nikon bought new from a camera store in San Francisco during a trip. I shot every roll I could afford to, and photography became an integral part of me.

Over the years, we visited many amazing places. The most memorable to me was sunrise at Mt. Haleakala. My father also instilled in me a passion for space. We often visited overlooks on the Blue Ridge Parkway to view meteor showers or spend nights watching them.

I spent several years shooting film, eventually transitioning between film and digital for my photography. I have a lot of experience and passion for 4x5 large format film, which is evident in my most recent work. Most of my images are shot in 4x5 format (8x10, etc.) or in panoramic format (6x12 or 6x17). I no longer use large format film, but my experiences

Now, I live in West Jefferson, North Carolina, with my beautiful and very understanding wife, two children, and four dogs. We continue to travel several times a year. They are very understanding of photography, which is always a major part of our trips, as well as nights out on my own.
